Preliminary Task

Question 7: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

When doing my preliminary task I didnt do any audience research so it was hard for me to decide what to include in my magazine as I didnt know what they would like. I think that my approach to the audience has improved as I analysed the results from my audience research and looked more at my target audience.

My preliminary task did help me to understand the conventions of magazines better as I did some research prior to creating the magazine. It helped me to apply these to my main task which made my magazine look more professional.

When creating my preliminary task I used InDesign and found I didnt like it so I switched to photoshop, I think that it is good that I learnt which one I prefer by doing the preliminary as it saved me time in the main task as if I had to switch half way through that I could have fallen behind on work. This also meant that during my preliminary I was able to experiment more with the software and understand it and find techniques and tools I could apply to the main task.

When evaluating my preliminary task and looking at others it made me see what not to do in the main task and what worked well, this is critical in helping me to maximise my marks and not make the same mistakes.

Question 6: What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

When creating my magazine I had to use various forms of technology, when experimenting with them I extended my knowledge on them more which made my product even better.

1. Internet Explorer

Before creating my magazine I had to do some research on other magazines, I used internet explorer to access websites and pictures to look at other magazines front covers and so on. I learnt that internet explorer contains much more useful information than you think and that search engines are very useful.

2. Digital Cameras

To take my images for the main task and the preliminary task I used the Nikon D70 camera, I havent used a professional camera before, DSLR's have so many more controls than ordinary digital cameras, I experimented with the controls and learnt what they did. I learnt that changing the apperture on the camera can create the background out of focus while the foreground (In this case the model) stayed in focus, this made images look more interesting.

3. Photoshop

I used photoshop to alter my images to make them better or more suitable. I experimented alot with photoshop and learnt new things and how to improve images. I cropped images to make them more suitable, changed the colour balance, contrast, curves, sharpness and much more. I think photoshop was the most useful tool. I also used it to make my magazine pages.

Here is one of my images which i chose to feature in my magazine, I decided that it needed to be cropped as the sky was very high and it didnt need to be

Here on my final double page spread you can see the difference between the cropped image and the non cropped image

4. Dafont

The fonts used in my magazine were from the website dafont.com. I hadn't used this site before so it was all new to me. After messing about and researching I learnt how to get the fonts and how you can use them on photoshop and other programs.

I found photoshop the most useful as you can do almost anything on it, I was able to erase parts of an image, move text behind an image, make text see-through and lots more.

Question 5: How did you attract/address your audience?

When making my magazine I used many different techniques to attract/address my audience these are:

- Use of language/mode of address: The language used is not complex, it is simple to read and understand. Most of my target audience would not be willing to read a big magazine with complex words as many are not highly educated. Some words are slang words and written in abbreviated forms to appeal to the audience.

- Use of font: For my masthead and page/ article headings I used a font called 'SF Automaton' this font will already be familiar to some of my target audience as a urban music group named 'Boy Better Know' use this font for their logo which is printed all over t-shirts, albums, posters and so on for everyone to see. This means that if somebody sees the font on my magazine they might be drawn to it.

- Contents: On the contents page I used words such as 'Exclusive' to draw audience in and want to read the magazine.. also on the front cover I stated popular artists names which the audience might want to read about.

- Images: Images were taken in an urban environment, front cover shows graffiti which most people are usually attracted to look at.

After doing my audience research it helped me to decide how to target my audience, I asked them what kind of features would draw them to a magazine and what they would like to see in a music magazine and made sure my magazine met the expectations.

Question 4: Who would be the audience for your music magazine?

The core buyer of my magazine will be people ranging from around 16 - 20's. This is because the music genre of my magazine appeals to younger audiences.

There will be more males buying the magazine than females, this is because many females do not like the topics and language used in some rap songs, however some females do but a small amount. All ethnicities will be attracted to the magazine but I believe that the majority of buyers might be black, this is because most of the artists are black and black people started this culture so more like it and would enjoy reading about it.

My target audience probably make music of this genre themselves in their spare time, they go out with their friends to parties, drink alcohol and some will smoke. They all have technology such as smartphones, ipods, games consoles and laptops/computers. They wear lots of known clothing brands such as Adidas, Nike, Gucci, Ralph Lauren, Louis Vuitton, Prada and more. The majority of them will shop in sports shops such as JD and designer shops or department stores, they may do alot of online shopping aswell. My target audience see live music often, most of the artist they like are always performing at their local clubs so they go and show their support there. Spare money they earn is probably spent on alcohol, drugs, clothing, music and partying. People of my target audience always like to be the first to get things, when their favourite artist is coming to perform near them dedicated fans will stay up all night until tickets are released just to get some.

When I did my 'Find your tribe' this was my result, I think it ties in with my target audience. It mentions artists which fall under my magazines genre and clothing brands which relate to the ones I stated to represent my target audience.

My target audience could fall into the socio-economic groups E, D and C2 due to the range of ages that listen to the urban genres.

Double Page Spread

This is the final version of the double page spread. I kept the background black to go with the overall theme and colour scheme of the magazine. The page header is in the trademark SF Automaton font to also go with the themes and to keep the magazine looking professional. The main text is written in the font 'Kartika' I chose this font because it is easy to read.. I decided to change the colours of the text in the interview part if the article to make it easier for the audience to read and more clearer.

Contents page

Here is my final contents page, I made sure the colours went with the colour scheme of the magazine and with the image, the fonts used are SF Automaton for the heading and Kartika for the text. I think the contents page looks professional and I like how the writing is behind the models head.
Storyboard drawings for images

These are plans for my photoshoot

Moodboard

This moodboard shows the images, fonts and colour schemes I am going to use in my magazine, after creating this moodboard and making the mock ups I decided to use some different fonts.

Double Page Spread Mock Ups

This is the first mock up of the double page spread I will create, I chose to put one image on the page by itself as it is a convention I have seen in many exisiting magazines.

I decided that I needed more room for text and decided to place it on the right hand page and to be smaller. I also put what font I am going to use for the title there as a reminder.

Question 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your music magazine and why?

I think that the magazine institution IPC may publish my magazine. I feel that the style of my magazine will fit in with their portfolio. They already deal with music magazines such as NME which focuses on new music, I think mine will be a good edition to the company as it deals with new music but different genres to NME. My target audience is teens - people in their twenties which is the same as most magazines under the IPC publishing. I think that my magazine will be different for the company and it is good to show contrast as it focuses on urban culture and music. There is definitely a gap in the market for my magazine because in the UK we do not have many easy to access and affordable magazines for this genre of music.

Another institution that I think might distribute my magazine is Bauer Media, they publish magazines like Kerrang, FHM and closer. A few of the magazines may appeal to teenage audiences but I don't think that many do and it is important for companies to keep their target audience vast to create maximum profit. I think that once again my magazine will be a unique edition to this company but will fit in.

I do not think that Future PLC will distribute my magazine. Many of their magazines are targeted at more older audiences such as 'Cross stitcher, The Knitter and Simply Knitting' so my magazine will be very unsuitable for this company.

This is the type of publication Future PLC deal with

Question 2: How does your music magazine represent particular social groups?

My magazine represents ordinary, middle class people. The social group is represented in the magazine genre itself, generally upper class people would not listen to rap music.

Most people like to read and look at things that they can relate to which is why I decided to dress the model in affordable high street clothing and to look like a normal person you would see walking the street. I also chose and urban location which you wouldn't see an upper class person in. Upper class people probably look at graffiti in disgust so would not like a magazine which is showing it in their images.

When doing my research I found that Vibe magazine has a similar approach to images, content, genre and mode of address as my magazine.

Question 1: In what ways does your music magazine use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real music magazines?

My music magazine uses some conventions of real magazines but also challenges others. When creating my masthead I wanted it to stand out and be different from other magazines so I decided to make it only be an outline of a font and to not be filled with colour, I haven't seen any other magazines do this so I thought it would make mine different.

The location used for my images is close to my house and I have visited it plenty of times, I thought that the graffiti nature of the location fitted well with the urban theme of the magazine. A variety of shots were used including a medium shot, long shot and low angled shot. The reason each image which is featured in the magazine is a different shot is to interest the audience and to make the magazine look appealing. When doing my research I noticed that in most magazines the shot angles and types varied throughout the magazine which looked good so I decided to use this convention in my own magazine. My images were manipulated in photoshop but not very much, they were manipulated to look clearer, brighter and more professional as all real magazines would do.

The costume of the model consists of a 'Barbour' jacket, this type of jacket is heavily worn by artists and people that follow an urban culture, there were no props used. As the model is a female the clothing is rather typical, however if the model was a male they would probably be wearing trainers and sports wear. The model is mixed race, this is conventional as most of the urban magazines I looked at had mixed race or black artists featuring in them, there are not many white rappers. It is generally youngish people that listen to this genre of music which is why the model and artists featured in the magazine are in their teens or 20's, the oldest artist I have seen to be in an urban magazine is probably in their early 30's so I followed in the footsteps of these magazines and used a young model.

In the UK there is a group of rappers called 'Boy Better Know' they use a particular font called SF Automaton for their logo and stuff, I liked the font and its unique so I downloaded it off Da Font and decided to use it for my masthead and headings for pages.

Here shows the logo and font.

All the colours used on my pages match with the colours shown in the images, I used the blues and oranges to make the magazine have a scheme and to look attractive.

When researching I found that 'Vibe' magazine had a direct and informal approach to their audience, they use slang words which relate to the genre of the magazine and to the type of people that would be reading it. I decided to use abbreviations and some light slang words in my magazine to make it more readable for the audience

The genre of my magazine is reflected through the artists featured in the magazine, the articles featuring and the urban colour schemes and images.

·        Layout of Front Cover, Contents page and Double page spread: take each of these on their own and discuss how you have followed or challenged conventions for the construction of each of the pages.  What is the balance/proportion of text to image? Is this a conventional approach? What was the purpose of this approach? Have you challenged conventions for any aspects o f your magazine pages or have you decided to follow conventions? Why? Use another magazine to support why you have taken this decision

·        Concluding Paragraph: Overall have you challenged or followed conventions? Why? (to make is behave like a real magazine/to satisfy  audience expectations/give the audience something different )

Front Cover

This is my final front cover, I decided to make the background black after experimenting with my mock ups, I think it looks better and more professional. On the cover I have advertised a 'Free CD' which comes with the magazine to attract audiences.

Contents Page Mock Up

Here is the first mock up contents page, I don't really like it and I think it looks tacky. The background takes focus away from the text and it looks too colourful.

I think this mock up looks much better however I didnt stick to the font theme and some of the text looks out of place. I like the black background though.

Mind Map of Magazine Contents

Images Chosen To Feature In The Magazine

Mock Up Front Covers

This is the first front cover that was created. All that was done was placed over the image.
I don't think that this front cover is very effective as the masthead isnt even placed in the centre and some of the text is hard to read. I don't really like the choices of font. To develop the front cover I shall change the fonts and make the background a solid colour.

After creating the first mock up I decided that the background of the image took focus away from the text, so I decided to make the background all white, this also made the magazine look more professional. The masthead in the first mock up was not in the center of the page so I made sure it was this time and changed the colour and font. I also placed the masthead behind the models head so some of the letters are not entirely seen. I have seen this in real magazines when doing my research so I decided to see how it worked out in my own magazine, I like the effect.

Shoot Location

As the magazine is based on urban music such as rap we decided we needed to do our shoot in an area that had urban scenery and was close to us. At first we was going to do it in Gossmore Park in Marlow but then decided that area may not be best and later changed the location to Higginson Park skate park in Marlow. We thought that this location may be better as it has lots of graffiti there and things that can be sat on, stood on ect. so we could get more exciting shots.

Research Evaluation

Find your tribe

You are a Blinger! There’s no ghetto fab for you – just fabulous. You wear your riches on your D & G sleeve. If you’ve got it, why not flaunt it? You love those that do – especially Americans. See heroes Jay-Z and P Diddy: men that aren’t afraid to flash their cash. You might not quite have their bank balances but you can still keep up appearances – your bedroom looks better than some of the ones in Cribs

Analysis

My result for the 'Find Your Tribe' shows that I am interested in urban music and celebs which I agree with. The result of this helped me to decide that my magazine will be based on the Urban music culture as I am interested in it.

Audience Research

Double Page Spread Analysis

Layout: All text is on one page, it is separated into 4 colums. Picture is on one page but stretches onto the other page slightly. Almost entire page is taken up by the big heading of the page which is a quote made by the model. The font of the heading is unusual and stands out.

Image: The image gives a certain image of lily allen, it looks very rock chick looking as she has black hair, heavy eyeliner and the red shirt.
Colour: The colours are all the same, red, white and black the image goes with the colours of the text

Drop capital: The article has a drop capital which is the big D, it makes the page look more interesting and draws the audience into reading the article

Layout: The image is on the left hand side and it spreads along to the right, text is behind the model which goes from left hand side to right. Article is in 3 collums

Contents Analysis

 House style
the magazine contents page in ‘vibe’ magazines  nearly always have this style. They have the big v which is in the same font as the masthead on the front covers are. The words ‘features’ and ‘fashion’ are always in the same font as headings for articles so readers can easily find which type of article they want to read, these headings are always present in vibe magazines. There is always a picture situated at the bottom of the page.
Layout
the word contents is at the top of the page on the right hand side, the text contents is written so that there are 2 letters of the word, then 4 underneath and then another 2, so the words letters are not all in a line like normal words are meant to be laid out. The articles and page numbers are also on the right hand side of the page under the word contents, they are here to fit the shape of the picture, the model (Ciara) has her legs going all the way up the left hand side of the page. I think this layout is effective as the image draws readers to look at the page and as the articles are right next to the picture they may read it.
Lure
the image used has been carefully selected, it is quite a sexual/ revealing image which would easily attract people to it and the magazine if they were flicking through to see the content.

Front Cover Analysis

Masthead – Big red writing stands out over T.I’s hat. The masthead is  stretched out the full width of the cover and is positioned at the top of the cover. The masthead font is the biggest size and brightest making it stand out and attract audiences .

Language – The language isn't very formal as the main article quotes T.I and says words such as ‘ain’t’ and ‘snitch’ many people who don’t listen to this particular genre of music that this music is aimed at (hip-hop, rap, R&B and urban music) they may not understand these words. Also their is another article which says ‘Mavado – Gangster for life’ which looks to attract a particular audience and age group as old people would not be interested in gangsters and neither would people that like rock music for example.

Main image – the main image is a medium close up of rapper T.I, the image is in black and white and the background is all white which makes the red surrounding writing stand out and catch the audiences attention. The model is not dressed in usual attire but instead is wearing a trilby hat, some geek glasses and a suit. He looks like an Italian gangster or something.

House style – many of the ‘vibe’ magazines use the similar red, black and white style on their front covers like this one.

List of artists being featured in the magazine – on the right hand side there is a list of a few popular artists, to some people these may be their favourites and it may lure them into buying the magazine so they can read about them.
Barcode – the barcode is used to scan in shops and underneath it is the magazines website.

Masthead – Big black writing stands out. The masthead is  stretched out the full width of the cover and is positioned at the top of the cover. The masthead font is the biggest size making it stand out and attract audiences. The masthead is also positioned behind the models.

House style – many of the ‘vibe’ magazines use the similar red, black and white style on their front covers like this one.

Models The cover models Eminem and 50 cent  are positioned on the right hand side of the magazine and then next to them is a big red box which says their names in big red writing  to stand out and attract audiences.

Target audience and language -  the magazine cover uses informal/slang language that people who use this kind of language will understand. There are words like ‘cool-ass’ to describe holiday gifts. On the skyline there is a article that says ‘Fergie talks smack’ which is very informal and some people may not understand this phrase. They have also abbreviated Philadelphia to philly. The use of this language is clearly aimed at a particular audience.

Sky Line - There is a sky line at the top of the magazine cover which gives an insight to what the magazine will contain, it is at the top because usually that is the 1st thing someone will see if they look at the magazine in a shop and it is behind others that will be the only thing visible.

Masthead – the masthead says ‘vibe’ in the usual font it uses in a sky blue colour. The colour of the font is the same. The model is in front of the text so the letters I and B are not clearly visible.

Main Image – the main image is a close up of Kanye West, he has a blank facial expression. The jacket he is wearing has a blue collar which matches the colour of the masthead.

Colour – the front page of the magazine uses bright, vibrant colours which stand out and could attract potential readers eyes, it is more likely for them to be drawn to a colourful magazine than a dull one as it looks more interesting and readable.

Cover lines – on the right hand side of the cover are some cover lines which list loads of artists that will be featured in the magazine, some people will read this and if they like the artist they may want to buy the magazine, this lures readers in.

Sky line – the sky line uses words which will make the readers want to buy the magazine, it says ‘exclusive on-set report: the making of Notorious 10 B.I.G secrets the film won’t tell’. This has been done cleverly as the use of the words ‘exclusive’ and ‘secrets’ make the person that is reading this want to buy it as ‘exclusive’ means this magazine would be the only place you can find out the secrets.

Masthead – this vibe magazine is a very old issue from 1994, the masthead font is the traditional font used by magazine however the spacing between the letters is wider than the newer editions, this shows how the magazine has changed and developed over time to make the appearance better.  Some of the masthead is slightly covered by the model – Tupac Shakur’s head. The masthead is a basic black colour, black is generally a colour associated with dark, sinister things, the choice of colour for the text reflects the dark theme of the issue which is murder and people being crazy.
Colour – the colours used relate the skyline which says 'The murder of Michael Jordan's Father', the colours used are red, black and a dull beige colour. The red relates to blood, the black is a colour used for dark topics and funerals and the beige makes everything look lifeless. The colour red is used to highlight certain words.

Main Image – the main image is a medium shot of Tupac  Shakur
